A Symphony of Style
We sat down with Niki to delve deeper into her design choices for this Colts Neck Farmhouse. Here's what she shared:
Q: Niki, this project strikes a beautiful balance between modern and classic elements. Can you tell us about your inspiration for this unique aesthetic?
Niki: This kitchen is the perfect example of a “Modern Farmhouse”. The rest of the house was furnished and decorated in that style so I wanted to make sure the kitchen would fit right in. My goal was to create a space that feels both cozy and functional. The modern farmhouse style perfectly balances a homely, comfortable atmosphere with modern amenities and design sensibilities. I wanted a space that was not only beautiful but also practical for everyday use.
Q: The interplay between modern wood tones and white cabinetry is captivating. How did you choose the specific wood tones to complement the white and create a cohesive look?
Niki: I chose white oak as an accent because of its natural beauty and durability. It adds a warm, organic touch to the kitchen. For the perimeter cabinetry, I went with a creamy white to create a bright and airy feel. The combination of white oak and white cabinetry creates a clean, cohesive look that is both timeless and fresh.
Q: Hardware can be a design statement in itself. Can you elaborate on the unique hardware selections, and how they elevate the overall aesthetic?
Niki: Absolutely, I like to use interesting hardware and accessories. For this project, I selected two-tone Emtek hardware, which combines brass and nickel with a textured finish. This choice adds a unique and sophisticated touch to the kitchen. Mixing metals creates a dynamic contrast that complements the cabinetry. The textured finish adds an additional layer of visual interest and modern feel.
Q: Smart storage solutions are key in any kitchen. Tell us about the cleverly concealed pantry and how it maintains the clean lines of the design.
Niki: I love that pantry! When I had my first meeting with the client, the first item on their wish list was to have a walk-in pantry. The room is not overly big, so I had to be creative to fulfill this request. My goal was to create a space where smaller appliances and overflow items could be stored, keeping the main kitchen area free of clutter. To achieve this, we designed beautiful custom white oak doors that blend seamlessly with the rest of the kitchen. These doors not only conceal the pantry, maintaining the clean lines of the design, but also add a touch of elegance and cohesion to the overall aesthetic.
Q: Beyond the kitchen, this project features a stunning built-in family room unit with wine fridges. How does this element integrate into the overall flow of the home?
Niki: The family room unit with wine fridges is an extension of the kitchen design, located in the adjacent room. Since the clients entertain frequently, they needed a versatile bar area that provides ample storage for board games and other essentials, and also houses a TV that complements the fireplace. We achieved this by using the same color cabinetry as in the kitchen, ensuring a cohesive look throughout the space. Additionally, we incorporated shiplap into the design, an essential element for capturing the farmhouse style.
Q: Working from home has become increasingly important. Can you describe the custom home office design, and how the deep blue cabinetry creates an inspiring workspace?
Niki: The custom home office design is one of my favorite elements of the project. To create an inspiring and functional workspace, we used deep blue cabinetry and painted the walls the same color, a technique known as color drenching. This rich, cohesive color scheme not only adds a sense of depth and sophistication to the room but also provides a calming yet motivating environment ideal for productivity. The custom design also includes built-in desks and shelving, which maximize the use of space and ensure that everything the client needs is within easy reach. I am so happy we used this bold color for the space.
Conclusion
Niki Kovacs' design for Beaver Dam Road Oasis showcases the power of thoughtful details. From the stunning interplay of materials to the cleverly concealed storage and the inviting home office design, this project exemplifies modern luxury at its finest.
