Kitchen Range Hood Design & Custom Kitchen Range Hoods
A kitchen range hood is an important and often-overlooked aspect of your kitchen design. Kitchen range hoods (also known as kitchen exhaust hoods or simply kitchen hoods) serve to protect both you and your kitchen. We all love the smell of a boiling pot of stew or the aroma of a skillet full of onions. Unfortunately other less pleasant odors, grease, moisture, steam, smoke and even carbon monoxide are also part of food preparation in your kitchen. A kitchen range hood works to move these airborne contaminants quickly out of your kitchen.
A few important things to know about kitchen range hoods / exhaust hoods:
-
A kitchen range hood comes with one of two types of fans, rotary or centrifugal. Centrifugal fans are generally both quieter and stronger making them common in high-end range hoods. Rotary fans tend to cost less and are more common in discount range hoods.
-
Noise level (measured in sones) is another important factor in picking your ideal kitchen range hood. Generally the strongest fans produce the most noise, though this is not guaranteed. Most kitchen hoods produce between 1 and 8 sones.
-
CFM or cubic feet per minute is a measure of how quickly your kitchen hood can move air. Exhaust hoods with higher CFM ratings move more air but tend to be louder as well.
-
Our custom kitchen range hoods come in a variety of materials. Picking a material that fits your kitchen design, your budget and your personal style is key. Choices include stainless steel, copper and wood range hoods just to name a few. A wood hood range has the advantage of being both elegant and more cost effective than other materials such as copper.
-
Not all ranges are against the wall. If you have an island range in your kitchen, you will need to invest in an island range hood. Island range hoods often require more ductwork and tend to be more complex to install than standard kitchen range hoods.
-
While a ducted or vented kitchen range hood is recommended, it is not always possible to have one. In cases where ductwork simply cannot be installed, non-vented or duct-free range hoods may be installed. Unlike the standard kitchen vent hoods, these non-vented range hoods use washable or replaceable filters.
